Toward Superhuman Hearing: Challenges and Opportunities in Assistive and Augmentative Listening Technology Heading link

Abstract: Imagine a hearing device that let you hold a quiet conversation in a crowded restaurant, chat with someone who speaks a different language, or understand what the heck the pilot just said over the public address system. Assistive and augmentative listening technologies, such as hearing aids, wireless broadcast systems, and extended-reality headsets, can change the way we hear by processing the sounds around us. There has been a recent surge of interest in listening technology thanks to regulatory changes in the hearing aid market and new AI-driven signal enhancement techniques. Arguably the most exciting trends, however, are the increased connectivity of listening devices and the proliferation of network-connected consumer and professional audio equipment. This presentation will show how next-generation networked listening devices can connect with nearby audio systems and with each other to confer superhuman hearing capabilities that would be impossible with one device alone.
