Lab Director: Ryan M. Corey, Ph.D. Heading link

Ryan M. Corey

Ryan M. Corey is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago and a Research Scientist at the Discovery Partners Institute. A hearing aid user for most of his life, Dr. Corey studies audio and acoustic signal processing to improve the performance of assistive and augmentative hearing technology, especially in noisy environments. His research emphasizes spatial signal processing technologies, including microphone arrays, distributed sensor networks, and wireless audio systems, that can perform better than single-microphone devices in noisy environments. As the first jointly appointed faculty member at DPI, he aspires to build a research program that centers the voices of marginalized groups and engages closely with industry and with the local community, especially the disability community.

A Chicago-area native, Dr. Corey completed the B.S.E. degree at Princeton University and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, all in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He was awarded the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and the Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. In 2017, he helped to found the Illinois Augmented Listening Laboratory at the Urbana-Champaign campus. He moved to DPI and UIC in 2023 to start the Listening Technology Lab. He has received best-paper awards for his work on wearable microphone arrays and dynamic range compression algorithms.
